30% of EU population suffer water shortages, 255B€ investment required by 2030

Map over European Water Shortages
Water scarcity in Europe shows the need for infrastructure investments.

A recent study concludes that EU countries need to spend €255 billion by 2030 to comply with EU regulatory requirements and reduce water leakage.  This comes as the EU raises strong concerns over European water resilience, finding that water stress affects 30% of the population on average every year and is on the increase.

The European Environment Agency highlights the increased stress on water supply and calls for reduced leakage to combat water scarcity in its recent report. Climate change is expected to further increase pressures on water resources, and the agency expects that water security will be compromised unless water management is improved by adequate structural investments and innovation.

A corresponding study by Water Europe cites data from the OECD and the European Commission when it concludes that EU countries would need to allocate an additional cumulative total expenditure of €255 billion for water supply and sanitation by 2030 in order to comply with the EU Drinking Water Directive, the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive and to reduce leakage to 10%.

“As a technology disruptor, Purapipe is well positioned to meet these challenges”, said Nick Cochrane-Dyet, Chairman of Purapipe. “By deploying seamless composite pipes with 50-year life span we can eliminate most of the leakage plaguing current infrastructure solutions. We are the only realistic alternative to address the issue on time, on budget and at a global scale.”
